A Sweet Starry Night - You're My Favourite Person | featuring Love From Lizi
Hi, crafty friends!
I’m so excited to share this heartfelt card with you today—it's a dreamy, starry night scene filled with soft, romantic vibes. This card captures a peaceful evening by the water, where a sweet couple sits together, simply enjoying each other's company. I wanted to create something that felt magical yet comforting, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!
Creating the Night Sky & Ocean
The background is where the whole scene began. I reached for my distress inks and blended shades of deep blue, purple, and a soft blush pink to create a galaxy-inspired sky. To darken the colors, I blended black ink over the color inks, but not the point of completely covering the colored inks. To bring the stars to life, I splattered white acrylic paint across the panel, adding that perfect cosmic twinkle.
For the ocean, I used deeper shades of blue distress inks and hand-drew gentle waves with a white gel pen for a calm, nighttime water effect. The horizon line where the sea meets the sky gives the card a peaceful, endless feel—just like a quiet moment shared with someone special. I then die cut the completed panel using a wonky stitched rectangle die for added texture and interest.
The Focal Point: A Sweet Couple by the Rocks
The adorable couple sitting together is truly the heart of this card. I colored them with alcohol markers, giving them warm, cozy tones to contrast with the cool night sky. They’re nestled on a cluster of shaded rocks, which I die-cut and shaded for a more dimensional effect.
I especially love how the characters' expressions radiate happiness and calm, making this card feel even more personal and heartfelt.
Adding Whimsy with the Clouds
To keep the dreamy theme going, I added some ink-blended clouds in soft pink and lavender hues. The gentle colors blend seamlessly into the night sky while still standing out as a design element.
The Sentiment: Heartfelt Simplicity
The sentiment, "You're My Favourite Person," was stamped in black for a bold yet elegant touch. I chose this phrase because it perfectly matches the peaceful, loving mood of the card. It feels both personal and universal—perfect for anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, or just to remind someone how special they are.
Finishing Touches for Sparkle & Dimension
To complete the design, I added tiny, clear rhinestone embellishments for a touch of sparkle, mirroring the stars above. The entire panel was then mounted on a black card base, making the colors pop even more and giving the scene a finished, polished look.
Step-By-Step Instructions:
Trim a sheet of Ranger Distress Heavystock Cardstock to 4.25” x 5.5”. Use masking tape to cover the top portion of the panel, securing it for ink blending.
Using blending brushes, apply Catherine Pooler Dye Inks to the bottom portion of the panel, starting with Stone Blue at the base, followed by Juniper Mist. Blend the colors together until you achieve a smooth gradient.
Remove the masking tape, then cover the bottom portion of the panel with fresh masking tape.
Using blending tools, blend Ranger Distress Oxide Inks on the top section of the card panel, starting with Worn Lipstick, followed by Seedless Preserves, Uncharted Mariner, and Chipped Sapphire. Blend thoroughly for a smooth transition between colors.
Lightly blend Black Soot Distress Ink over the entire sky portion to deepen the colors, creating a nighttime effect. Be careful not to over-blend, as you want the original colors to remain visible.
With a Ranger Distress Sprayer, mist small droplets of water over the sky area (keeping the bottom masked off). Gently press a clean paper towel onto the panel to lift some of the ink, revealing a starry effect.
To add brighter stars, dip a fan brush into Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleed Proof White Ink. Smear the ink onto an acrylic block, add a few drops of water, and mix. Lightly flick the brush against the edge of the block to splatter white ink across the sky. Allow it to air dry.
Using the Love From Lizi “Favourite Person” stamp set, stamp the right-facing male, left-facing male, the sentiment “You’re My Favourite Person,” and various balloons onto 80# Neenah Solar White Cardstock with Lawn Fawn Jet Black Ink.
Fussy cut the two people and the sentiment with fine-tip scissors, leaving a thin white border. Cut out the balloons directly along the black outline, leaving no white border.
Color the people and balloons with COPIC alcohol markers. The balloons will be colored in shades of gray to resemble rocks.
Die cut one large, two medium, and two small clouds using Lawn Fawn’s Simple Puffy Cloud Dies. Lightly blend any residual ink from your blending brushes onto the edges of the clouds. Then, use a blending tool with Ranger Distress Ink in Lost Shadow to shade the entire surface, giving the clouds a soft, moody look while smoothing out the previously blended colors.
Assemble the card by layering the elements. Use the gray balloons to create a “stone wall” for the couple to sit on and arrange the clouds throughout the sky. Adhere the pieces at varying heights using Scrapbook Adhesives Foam Tape and Bearly Art Liquid Adhesive to add dimension.
Finish the design by adding small clear rhinestones across the night sky for extra sparkle.
Complete the card by mounting the finished panel onto a top-folding black card base made from Taylored Expressions Black Licorice Cardstock.
